If you have been trying to declutter your clothes closet, paring down the tie collection can be a good way to make space. Yes, you can donate ties. And for the ones you are going to keep, this is the best way to store ties in a drawer (where they are less likely to wrinkle) and you free up space in the closet.
Rule of Thumb for the Number of Ties
The way you dress might be more casual these days. If that is the case, you might want to declutter the dress shirts and suits. For the ones you keep, a good rule of thumb is to keep three ties per suit or shirt you wear with a tie. That number allows you to mix and match the collection.
Only keep that many if you 1. really wear them 2. prefer not to repeat ties and outfits often 3. have storage space to store them all
Share, sell, donate some/most if you: 1. don’t wear them 2. someone else needs them more than you
The best way to store ties in a drawer
Yes, you can hang ties in the closet. But they can wrinkle easily or fall to the floor where you never see them again. I prefer tie storage in the drawer. Roll the ties and place them in a divided box with the tie pattern face up. That way at a glance you can see which one you are looking for easily.
